Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a five-match ban after shoving referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea moments after being sent off during last night’s win over Barcelona.
Left out of the starting line-up, Ronaldo scored with a beautiful strike to make it 2-1 in the 80th minute and earned a yellow card for taking off his shirt to flex his muscles at Camp Nou.
The Real Madrid star was booked again just two minutes later for diving in the area and reacted to the decision by shoving the referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea from behind.
Ronaldo will now miss Wednesday’s second leg in Madrid and four La Liga matches. He was also fined £2,700.
Madrid went ahead in the 50th from an own-goal by Barcelona defender Gerard Pique.
Lionel Messi equalised for Barcelona in the 77th when he converted a penalty after Luis Suarez was fouled by goalkeeper Keylor Navas.
Marco Asensio got 10-man Madrid’s third goal in the 90th.
Mateo Kovacic could have given Real the lead in the first minute after Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s poor clearance gifted a chance to the visitors, but the midfielder’s attempted lob fell into the backtracking goalkeeper’s arms.
