ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—More than 170 people were injured on the outskirts of Islamabad Saturday after security forces tried to clear a protest by Islamist activists who had blocked a main road into Pakistan’s capital for more than two weeks.

Thousands of police and paramilitary personnel used tear gas, water cannons and baton charges to disperse protesters, who fought back by throwing stones, according to the interior minister. Pakistan Television, the state broadcaster, reported that 144 people were arrested.
